Samsung has announced a major upgrade of its Bixby voice assistant with enhanced AI features, launching alongside the One UI 8.5 update later this year.
Samsung Unveils Revamped Bixby Voice Assistant
Samsung Electronics has announced a major upgrade to its Bixby voice assistant, integrating advanced artificial intelligence features and unveiling a new interface that will debut with the upcoming One UI 8.5 software update.
AI Features and Smarter Voice Recognition
The company said the new Bixby will leverage generative AI to improve conversational abilities and contextual understanding, aiming to offer a more natural and intuitive user experience. According to Samsung, the rebooted assistant will understand complex and multi-step commands, maintain conversation context, and adapt to individual user preferences.
"Our goal is to make Bixby a true AI companion that can proactively assist users throughout their day," said a Samsung spokesperson during the reveal. "With generative AI, Bixby will become more flexible and intelligent than ever before."
Integration with One UI 8.5
The upgraded Bixby will launch with One UI 8.5, Samsung’s next major version of its Android-based interface. The update is expected to roll out to flagship Galaxy devices later this year, though specific dates have not been confirmed. Existing Bixby users will receive the AI-enhanced features via a software update.
Samsung did not disclose compatibility details for older models, but a statement said the upgrade will reach "millions of Galaxy users globally" over the coming months.
Background and Market Context
Bixby was first introduced in 2017 as Samsung’s answer to voice assistants from Apple and Google but has struggled to gain comparable market share. According to Statista, Bixby held around 10% of the global mobile voice assistant market in 2023.
The reboot follows a broader industry trend of integrating generative AI into consumer devices. Competing companies, including Apple and Google, recently announced similar upgrades for Siri and Google Assistant, focusing on large language models and improved personalization.
Analyst Perspectives
Industry analysts say the new Bixby’s success will depend on its real-world performance and integration with Samsung’s ecosystem of smart devices. "Consumers now expect AI assistants to be seamlessly proactive and context-aware," said Jun Lee, technology analyst at Counterpoint Research. "Samsung’s AI push for Bixby could help close the gap with leading voice platforms."
Availability
Samsung is expected to share more details, including a demo of the upgraded Bixby, at its next Unpacked event. The One UI 8.5 update with the new Bixby will begin its global rollout in the second half of 2024.
